Mettle: IT Infrastructure Management Solutions from Linuxense

Wednesday, May 25th, 2005

Linuxense is stepping into hardware-based IT Infrastructure Management Solutions business under the brand name Mettle.

Linux can play several other roles than serving as a desktop OS or as a sever OS. It can function as a router, firewall and many more. Given enough hardware resources it can out-perform several commercially available proprietary hardware solutions.

So far such capabilities of Linux remained with some do-it-yourself administrators and hobbyists. Now, you can avail of these capabilities in the Mettle platform and that too can be purpose-built taking advantage of the flexibility of the Linux operating system.

Unlike proprietary hardware platforms, Mettle devices do not become obsolete unless you need a hardware upgrade. This is because of the fact that it runs on Linux. Also, in off-the-shelf proprietary devices it is unavoidable to pay for features which you would never use and at the same time it may not cater your requirements completely. But Mettle avoids both; thanks to the flexibility of Linux and Open Source software.

Says Anil Kumar K., Vice President (Engineering), “If you buy proprietary hardware solutions rather than a Mettle device you would end up buying a dozen of them to get the same set of functions yet of less reliability due to the external interconnections of those boxes.'’ Considering the set of functionalities it offers, Mettle devices are very much cost-effective too compared to the money otherwise you would need to spend on a number of proprietary devices.

Linuxense provides both value-for-money solutions aimed at small and medium enterprises and robust, high availability (HA), high performance solutions designed for large enterprise, ISPs and service provides.
